From autumn 2010 the MA in Contemporary British History is being offered at King’s College London, with full access to all the facilities of the College. Please click here to read the full details of the MA programme at the KCL website, with information on how to apply.
The course now includes two exciting new History & Policy option courses: * History and Policy: Policymaking under Pressure * History and Policy: Long-Term Policy Problems
Taken either together or on their own, these modules, each taught over one tem, will be of interest to anyone seeking a history MA with a unique and contemporary twist that is clearly relevant and applicable to the present. They is designed both for people who have worked in a policy or media-related field and want to pursue their historical studies in a format relevant to their career and for those looking to go on to doctoral research and being able to demonstrate the impacts of their research in the public sphere. They will consider how policy is made, how history can contribute to the policy-making process, and how it has been used to inform policy decisions.
History and Policy: Policymaking under Pressure
Topics will include: - History in the Headlines – analysis and communication plans - Writing History for Policymakers
The course will then be taught by means of a range of case studies, examining how history was, could have been and can be applied to policy, considering particularly policy-making under the pressure of immediate events. These will cover subjects such as Banking Crises, the Home Office and law reform and strikes and industrial relations.
History and Policy: Long-Term Policy Problems
Topics will include: - What can History contribute to Policy? - Communicating History to Policy
It will also include a range of case studies, examining how history was, could have been and can be applied to policy, considering particularly recurring policy-making problems. These will cover subjects such as an ageing society, healthcare spending and the NHS, Northern Ireland, the European Union and defence policy and spending.
