Introduction to postgraduate study at the CCBH

The CCBH is one of the three research centres at the Institute of Historical Research (IHR). We are situated in the heart of London, with easy access to the major archives and unrivalled libraries of the UK's capital city. As part of the University of London's School of Advanced Study we offer research degrees leading to MPhil or PhD, an MA in Contemporary British History, training programmes and short courses. Graduate students are registered students of the University of London, at the School of Advanced Study. They are not required to be members of any other School or College of the University.

The IHR only takes students at the postgraduate level and provides a relaxed but intensive atmosphere for the study of history. The IHR has an excellent open access library and students enjoy the advantage of studying in an international centre for research. They have full access to the IHR's extensive programme of seminars, lectures, conferences and colloquia in which scholars of international repute regularly participate; and to high-level training courses in research skills and methods.
CCBH staff offer PhD and MPhil supervision in the following areas (click on the name for more information):
Professor Pat Thane - women's and gender history, demographic history, social and economic policy, the history of the Labour party since the early 20th century

Professor Richard Roberts - financial history, business history, modern economic history, film and history

Dr Michael Kandiah - the Conservative Party in the 20th century, postwar British politics and policymaking

Dr Elisabeth Kehoe - British museums and galleries, British national identity and nationalism, C19th and C20th biography and women’s history

CCBH currently supervises 21 research students, eight of whom hold AHRC studentships.
