This seminar was held in Senate House on 25 November 2004, organised by the CCBH with support from Rabobank, Defra and Tesco. The chair was Dr N.P. Ludlow (LSE), and the introductory paper and chronology were written by Diana Twining.

SIR MICHAEL FRANKLIN, KCB, CMG Principal, Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, 1956. Private Secretary to Minister for AFF, 1961-64. Assistant Secretary, Head of Sugar and Tropical Foodstuffs Division, 1965-68. Under Secretary (EEC Gp), MAFF 1968-73; a Deputy Director General, Directorate General for Agriculture, EEC, 1977-81. Permanent Secretary, MAFF, 1983-87.

D. SCOTT JOHNSTON Scottish NFU Economic Secretary, 1960s; Assistant General Secretary for SNFU and on COPA Committee of Experts, and International Federation of Agricultural Producers’ International Committee, represented SNFU on hill farming in Heath application, 1970s. Chief Executive of SNFU, member of the COPA praesidium and an executive for the Scottish Council for Development in Industry.
He retired from SNFU December 1979, and subsequently worked as consultant in the Bulgarian and Romanian preparations for accession to the EEC.

PROFESSOR SIR JOHN MARSH, CBE Professor of Agricultural Economic and Management, later of Agricultural and Food Economics, University of Reading, 1984-97.

EDMUND NEVILLE-ROLFE Author of Agricultural Marketing and EEC (London: Hutchinson, 1971).

PETER POOLEY, CMG Assistant Principal, MAFF, 1959; seconded to Diplomatic Service and served in Brussels, 1961-3. CSD, 1978-9; Under-Secretary, MAFF, 1979; Fisheries Secretary, MAFF, 1982. Director General for Agriculture, EC, 1983-89; Director General for Development, 1989-95 (Acting Director, 1992-95), EC; Honorary DG, EC, 1996; Interim Secretary-General, COPA/COGECA, 1995-96.

MICHAEL STRAUSS Commonwealth Economic Committee, 1950-54; NFU Economist and then Director of Policy 1954-96; Member of EC Economic and Social Committee, Brussels, 1984-96; member of Economic and Social Committee of EEC, 1984-96.

DR HELMUT FREIHERR VON VERSCHUER German member of the Agriculture Directorate General of the Commission from the outset. Assistant to the Director General of DGVI during the first negotiations and senior Commission negotiator for the second.
